Free-Lance
Illustrator
Responsibilities.
Jobs in illustration tend to be free lance rather than full-time. Free-lance
illustrators may do work for advertising agencies, retail stores, manufacturers,
textile and fiber houses, pattern companies, display houses, and publications.
Skills / Preparation Required.
Illustration degree required. Must have excellent portfolio indicating
distinctive illustration style and creativity. Should be well organized
and have ability to run own free - lance business (negociat mg contracts,
setting rates, billing, keeping own records).
Personal Qualities Required. Ability to work rapidly under pressure of
deadlines, good follow-through, creativity, aggressiveness, self-motivation.
Sketcher
Responsibilities.
Apparel manufacturers may hire sketchers on a free - lance or full-time
basis to sketch garments for their records. These sketches are not used
for reproduction and are not considered illustration. They must show clear
details of garment construction. In full-time positions other duties such
as clerical work may be included in the job.
Skills / Preparation Required. Illustration or fashion design degree,
knowledge of garment construction, ability to do detailed sketches with
tight hand.
Personal Qualities Required. Flexibility, ability to work rapidly under
pressure, good communication skills.
